Cleaning / Pressing

As a cost effective guideline, books should be worth at least $500 in their present condition. Golden, Silver and some Bronze Age books. No Modern books.

Cleaning involves simple, very light dry erasure in white areas of book, front and back covers within CGC/CBCS guidelines for Universal Label. Pressing involves local and intact pressing on covers and interior pages.

All work is performed by me. Critical attention to detail for cleaning and pressing. Customers pay grading, certification and postage fees to CGC™.

Showcase #4, 1956

This Showcase #4 is an example of maintaining the original condition of 1.5 (Universal Blue Label graded by CGC) by cleaning/pressing, rather than true restoration to approximately 5.0 Restored for the purpose of 1) lower cost and quick turnaround of service and 2) consistent value increase of a non-restored key Silver Age comic book like a Showcase #4.

True Restoration

Typically a book in Fair to Good condition can be improved to Fine/Very Fine "restored" with excellent results. (See Gallery). Candidates to consider are Golden and Silver Age books, No Moderns.

• Cleaning (dry and aqueous)

• Light to Heavy Mending/Filling on front and back covers

• Art Recreation of Fills

• Color Touch Interior and Exterior of Covers

ACTION COMICS #1 - JUNE, 1938

This iconic comic book was acquired for restoration in 1992. Book contained previous restorations and tape along the spine that needed removal. Covers are cleaned (washed) and pressed flat. Skinned areas and holes of front and back covers as well as margins are mended and filled to prepare for acrylic color touch. Interior spine reinforced for structural support. Each individual page pressed and book re-assembled using original staples and pressed intact.

Conservation

Conservation is a detailed, skilled service that involves repairing tears, re-attaching pieces and/or reinforcing spines to provide structural support to covers and interior pages. Different types of Japanese tissues are used for types of strength: heavier papers for Golden Age covers and lighter ones for Silver Age. This is a very satisfying procedure to re-align and repair a book so that it is functional and easier to hold, open and close and of course, read and enjoy.

A conservation disclosure certificate will be provided to the customer upon completion.
